The Marine Information Management System

The Marine Information Management System (MIMS) is an open repository that archives and publishes collections and subsets of marine related datasets for the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment: Oceans and Coastal Research (DFFE:OCR), South Africa. It hosts the Southern African Data Centre for Oceanography (SADCO) historical data archives.

MIMS is the South African node for ocean data identified by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. As an IOC/IODE Accredited Data Unit, it is bounded to international standards of best practice.

All spatial data listed below can be downloaded from DFFE's EGIS website and can be viewed on the Coastal Viewer. The links below will allow you to download the official maps.

Marine Spatial Planning WMS geospatial services

Agreements with data custodians have allowed for certain MSP WMS geospatial services to be shared. This allows users to view the spatial data in their own GIS and/or webmap environments without obtaining the actual data. As such, users are to note that:
- these layers reflect data that is part of the MSP process, as shown on the MSP Viewer;
- these layers may not be the most recent release/version;
- original data must be sourced from the relevant custodian (contact details are provided in the metadata).

DFFE's Environmental Geographic Information System (EGIS)

The DFFE's EGIS website provides free downloadable geospatial data for which the department is the custodian. These datasets extend inland, providing national coverage of relevant environmental data. Furthermore, the page also provides access to various interactive map viewers. Examples of the DFFE's departmental projects and collaborations include, but are not limited to:

Protected Areas and Conservation Areas data (PACA)
South African National Land Cover (SANLC) and Change Assessment (CA) Datasets
